Our kidneys are super important for our health. They filter our blood, produce hormones, absorb minerals, produce urine, eliminate toxins, and neutralize acids. So as one of the most important organs in your body, your kidneys deserve some love.
Damage or steady decline of your kidneys can often go unnoticed for years as your kidneys can still do their job with as little as 20% of their capacity. Therefore kidney diseases are often referred to as “The Silent Diseases”. That’s why it is so important to take care of them before it is too late.
Here’s a list of 10 common habits that put a lot of pressure on your kidneys and can cause serious damage over time.
Your kidney’s most important function is to filter blood and eliminate toxins and waste materials. When you don’t drink enough plain water during the day toxins and waste material start to accumulate and can cause severe damage to your body.
Your body needs sodium or salt to work properly. Most people however consume too much salt which may raise blood pressure and put a lot of stress on the kidneys. As a good rule of thumb, no more than 5 grams of salt should be eaten on a daily basis.
Many of us ignore the urge to go because they are too busy or want to avoid public bathrooms. Retaining urine on a regular basis increases urine pressure and can lead to kidney failure, kidney stones, and incontinence. So listen to your body when nature calls.
Scientific studies show that people who consume 2 or more sugary drinks a day are more likely to have protein in their urine. Having protein in your urine is an early sign your kidneys are not doing their job as they should.
Eating a clean, whole food diet full of fresh vegetables and fruits is important for your overall health and a good kidney function. Many deficiencies can increase the risk of kidney stones or kidney failure. Vitamin B6 and magnesium, for instance, are super important to reduce the risk of kidney stones.
An estimated 70 to 80 percent of Americans isn’t getting enough magnesium, so there may be a good chance that you are one of them. Click here to learn more about magnesium deficiencies.
Over consumption of protein, especially red meat, increases the metabolic load on your kidneys. So more protein in your diet means your kidneys have to work harder and this can lead to kidney damage or dysfunction over time.
We have all heard how important it is to get a good night’s rest. Chronic sleep deprivation is linked to many diseases and kidney diseases are also on the list. During the night your body repairs damaged kidney tissue, so give your body the time to heal and repair itself.
Just as salt, caffeine can raise blood pressure and put extra stress on your kidneys. Over time excessive consumption of coffee can cause damage to your kidneys.
Way too many people take painkillers for their small aches and pains, while there are many all-natural, safe remedies available. Excessive use or painkiller abuse can lead to severe damage of liver and kidneys.
Although there is nothing wrong with enjoying a glass of wine or having a beer once in a while, most of us don’t stop after just one drink. Alcohol is actually a legal toxin that puts a lot of stress on our kidneys and liver.
To stay healthy and avoid kidney issues it is important to eat lots of fresh, whole foods and if you keep the above information in mind and avoid these common habits as much as possible, your kidneys will not be under constant stress and your body will thank you for that.
Blood pressure issues are very common in America and it is no wonder that one of the largest classes of prescription drugs are anti-hypertensives – in other words, medications that will bring the blood pressure down to a healthy level. However, not everyone wants to make use of these prescriptions and for those who prefer to treat this condition naturally, there are many ways to do this.
Eat Plenty of Fruits and Vegetables
Every day if possible, “strive for five” – get five servings of fruits and vegetables into the diet. Fresh produce is not only low in sodium, many fresh fruits and vegetables tend to be potassium-rich as well, which lowers sodium’s impact on blood pressure levels. White and sweet potatoes, spinach, citrus fruits and bananas are all particularly high in potassium.
Embrace Healthy Fats
Not all fats are bad. In fact, monounsaturated fats actually help strengthen the heart and are linked to both lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Good sources of these fats include olive and canola oil, nuts, and fatty fish like salmon.
Go Whole Grain
Switching from refined products like those that contain refined white flour or white rice is one of the healthiest changes someone can make to their diet. Whole grain breads, pastas and couscous, barley and brown rice are all high in fiber, which is excellent for heart health while refined flours and similar products are linked to obesity, one of the major risk factors for high blood pressure.
Love Your Dairy
Dairy products can actually be great for heart health – as long as they are low fat, that is. Dairy is rich in calcium which is essential for regulating blood pressure. Low-fat dairy will also provide all the nutrients of their full-fat counterparts without the added risk of weight gain or higher cholesterol.
Increase Intake of Legumes
Leguminous plants, a group which includes beans, lentils and peas – are magnesium-rich, and magnesium has been shown to have a direct and beneficial impact on blood pressure. These plants can be especially good for the heart if 4 to 5 servings a week are included in the diet.
Indulge in Dark Chocolate
In small amounts, dark chocolate is also incredibly heart-healthy. Cocoa is rich in antioxidants which in turn stimulate the body to produce nitric oxide, a natural vasodilator. This means that it can relax the blood vessels, expanding their circumference and thus lower blood pressure naturally.
Increasing physical exercise has been linked in study after study to lower blood pressure rates. Benefits are particularly good when people are able to include around 30 minutes of moderate exercise daily.
Blood pressure is a very common problem, but not an insurmountable one. Lifestyle changes like those discussed above allow someone to take charge of their health and be pro-active in maintaining low blood pressure and a healthy heart.
Most people don’t give much thought to their toothbrushes – and if they do, they assume that, because it is used to clean the teeth and mouth every day that it, too, is clean. Wrong! Toothbrushes actually have some ugly secrets to hide which consumers should be aware of. Seven of these ugly truths are discussed below.
Researchers from Manchester University of England recently discovered that an uncovered toothbrush is a harbor for bacteria and can actually contain around 100 million individual bacteria cells. What is even more disturbing is that some of these bacteria include staphylococci, a culprit in many skin infections and e. coli, the cause of gastrointestinal infections and diarrhea.
Many researchers were not surprised by the results above – after all, the human mouth is and always has been a breeding ground for all sort of bacteria. The problem can begin, however, when an imbalance happens between the beneficial and harmful bacteria in the mouth. This imbalance can lead to the formation of plaque and eventually to gum disease.
So, bacteria in the mouth are a fact of life, but as long as a certain balance is kept, generally there is no problem. However, sometimes brushing can actually cause problems because it can push the bacteria beneath the skin in your mouth, where it can foment serious infections. They can lead to recurring illnesses if your immune system is low or somehow compromised.
The Manchester University researchers do not for the most part subscribe to the belief that brushing your teeth harms your health, even if the toothbrush does harbor large concentrations of bacteria. However, they do caution that people think about how their brush is being stored, including how close it is to the toilet. When the toilet it flushed, it can send a spray of water and bacteria into the air, bacteria you do NOT want near your toothbrush.
Toothbrush holders, particularly if they are close to the toilet, can harbor whole colonies of bacteria. Oddly enough, even though people rank the toothbrush holder as a place that it likely to harbor germs, it often gets overlooked when the bathroom is getting cleaned. It is important, though, to clean and disinfect the holder regularly to prevent this problem.
Now that it has been established that toothbrushes are bacteria magnets, what is there to be done? Researchers recommend rinsing the toothbrush after use, drying it, storing it in an upright position and, though this sounds counter-intuitive, not using toothbrush covers, since they, too, can become harbors for germs.
There are several products currently on the market that will sanitize a toothbrush. However, while some of these products have been shown to actually be effective at cleaning bacteria, there remains no evidence to show that keeping the toothbrush sanitized will prevent you from becoming ill.
Toothbrushes are a lot dirtier than many people believe. However, following a few important safety tips like the ones discussed above can keep them healthier and safer for you and your mouth!
1. Making customers wait
Customer impatience isn’t necessarily about how long they have to wait, but the lack of information on how long the wait will be, or a wait time that is longer than promised. Be forthright with customers regarding delivery timeframe and always keep them informed so they know exactly what to expect.
2. Delivering only what you promise
Keeping your promise is just the bare minimum. Murphy contends, “… you need to wow them every time by offering [and delivering] them even more than they think is fair.”
3. Being hard to contact
Can many of your customers’ questions and needs be met online or by calling the home office? Sure. But if they want to talk to you, nothing else will satisfy them. Don’t make customers work to get in touch with you.
4. Selling to them constantly
One of the great challenges of effective selling is walking that fine line between “pursuing every opportunity” and operating in a constant, full-on sales mode that customers find both exhausting and obnoxious. One way to avoid sales fatigue is to consistently bring valuable information and insights to customers, ensuring a balance to your sales agenda.
5. Being secretive and opaque
When left in the dark, customers tend to assume the worst. Be as transparent with customers as possible. It’s a critical element in building trust.
Ekiti State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faction loyal to Senator Ali Modu Sheriff has carpeted the threat by Governor Ayodele Fayose of the State to dump the party should Sheriff win at the Supreme Court.
The party said “we shall not miss him.”
The faction, in a statement made available to journalists in Ado Ekiti, on Thursday, alleged that “one very painful fact which is driving Governor Fayose away from PDP is that it is inconceivable for him to have lost control of the party structures in Ekiti State from ward to Local Givernment and state level in accordance with a federal high court judgement.”
In the statement signed by the deputy chairman, Olasunkanmi Ogunbiyi and secretary, Ilesanmi Obe, the faction claimed that “the exit of Fayose from PDP will not adversely affect the fortunes of the party,” adding that “all the ward, local government and state executives as well as the state’s leadership caucus remain intact.”
The faction also said “most of the elected and appointed officials at all levels of government have resolved to remain in PDP and are not following Fayose if he eventually defects again and chase shadows as usual.”
According to them, “all the 177 wards and 16 local governments still believe in the PDP as the party that delivered and performed best so far since the creation of Ekiti State.
“The incontrovertible fact is that on the two occasions he won the governorship elections it was the PDP that provided the platform and opportunities for him.”
Ogunbiyi and Obe recalled that Fayose had once tried his popularity when he contested for the Central senatorial seat while in Labour Party, noting that he “failed woefully and this proves that the platform aided his victories and not his so-called popularity.”
They said, “if he decides to leave PDP again, we shall not miss him as the party remains strong and in fact under the able leadership of Chief Clement Awoyelu, the first state chairman of the party,” saying “when Fayose dumped the party in 2007, we went ahead to win the governorship election and all the nine National Assembly seats and 13 House of Assembly seats without him.”
The Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, yesterday in Lagos said that out of the 1,648,429 million candidates writing the ongoing UTME, the results of 1,048,914 have been released.
This was just as he also announced the extension of JAMB’s portal for registration, adding that it will finally close its registration portal on 28th May.
He said that in addition to the 1,048,914 results that have been released, over 30,406 results are also ready for upload before midnight today.
He said: “As at today, 1,648, 429 are taking our examination and we have released the result of 1,048,914. That is the result we have released up till yesterday.
“On the first day, we released the results of Sunday because anything you call CBT, the results are ready, but for environmental reasons, we do not release the results immediately.
“That is to ensure we go through the CCTV camera to see whether there are report of malpractice and prevent the situation whereby those who do not pass become agitated at the CBT centres.
“We have released the results of Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and we are going to release today’s result before 12 midnight. This morning, the results of 30,046 will be release.
Asked the performances of candidates results so far, he said: “The candidates have not done badly from the resrults released so far.” As soon as the last person finished writing the last paper today, we will upload additional over 30,406 results before 12 midnight today.”
Oloyede, also disclosed that JAMB’s portal for registration has not closed, adding that it will finally close its registration portal on 28th May.
He said that he got the mandate from the Senate few weeks ago to increase the UTME registration period by one month, which according to him will elapse on 28th of May.
“As I speak, we have registered additional 1,100 candidates,” he added.
Oloyede who disclosed during this during his visit to one of the CBT Centres in Lagos said that in 2018, fingers print may no longer be required.
He explained: We have now been able to catch those people who registered two people with the same names. The impersonator and the one being impersonated went in collaboration with the CBT centres after screening them.”
He said: “Both the impersonator and one being impersonated used each fingers. While, the impersonator used two thumb fingers, the impersonated used eight fingers to register.
Thus, we have ten registered fingers and the ten fingers were not from one person.
“In some centres, when we tested all their fingers, we discovered that they were impersonator who had used two of their fingers thumbs in both hands.
“By next year, we may not use finger print, there are other technologies whereby with the technology, everything about the candidate is captured. We need to move in that direction.”
A top Biafran war commander and very close associate of late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, popularly referred to as “Air Raid’’ during the civil war, Col. Joe Achuzia, has said that the survival of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) as a political party should be the concern of all Igbo.
He described the APGA as the soul of the Igbo. Col. Achuzia recalled that the two gifts late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu gave to Igbo were Biafra and the APGA, saying that it was on the two that late Ojukwu’s soul rested.
He posited that since the first republic that the Igbo were not only denied a shot at the presidency as no political party was willing to give them presidential ticket but were also prevented from having ideological political platform to rally round their own people except the APGA.
Col. Achuzia, a British-trained aeronautic engineer and one-time Secretary General of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, spoke inside his sitting room at his Asaba residence while receiving the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State on Political Matters, Mr Arinzechukwu Awogu, who came to felicitate with him on his 90th birthday that came up on May 17, 2017.
He commended Governor Obiano for living up to the dreams of APGA’s founding fathers despite the challenges in human management and implored him to ensure that APGA produced presidential candidate in 2019 general election, if Biafra did not come before then.
The fiery war commander revealed that it was Ojukwu’s desire for it to be on record that an Igboman ran for the presidency of Nigeria in every election year and that the Igbo could only come together under a political unit and nurture same to national mainstream.
Nnamdi Kanu, the embattled leader of the Pro-Biafran group, Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has reacted to popular opinion that he intends to become the president of the Republic of Biafra if the dream is actualized.
Mr. Kanu who was recently released on bail while speaking with Vanguard noted that he has always preferred to work in the background adding that if the pioneer leader of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, Chief Ralph Uwazurike had remained consistent and true to the struggle for Biafra, he would not have been in the forefront of the movement.
The embattled IPOB leader who insisted that the actualization of a Republic of Biafra was a foregone conclusion noted that he understands the stand of some South East governors and other political office holders’ on issues relating to IPOB and Biafra.
He further noted, “I am into this struggle because of leadership vacuum. I am into this struggle because my people are suffering; they are being denied their rights and privileges and nothing will stop this fight. I want to assure our people that we are almost there.
“The Biafra Republic is almost here with us. Even if one is from Sokoto, he can be a Biafran once he believes in our value system of equity, justice and fairness.
“Biafra will be a home for all people who agree with our values, whether you are from Kano or Sokoto. It will be a place for good things for good people. Therefore, those who are distancing themselves from the Biafra struggle will regret it. If you don’t join the struggle, you will be irrelevant in the end because Biafra Republic is sure.”
Many girls dream of fairy-tale weddings and wedded bliss with the man of their dreams, but many are disappointed when they find out the truth about marriage. We don’t want to put anyone off getting married; being in a happy marriage is wonderful, but there are a few home truths that you should know before you tie the knot. What many people don’t realise is that marriage takes hard work to make it a success, it doesn’t just happen. If you are thinking about getting engaged, read these ten things to know before getting married, before you make that commitment.
1. Marriage will not make you whole
Marriage really shouldn’t be your only ambition in life. If you are under the impression that marriage will fulfil you and make you whole, then you will be in for a surprise. A marriage is a partnership of two equals and your individuality is important too. Discover for yourself who you are and what you are, before you get married, because marriage won’t do that for you.
2. You will need to compromise on some of your dreams
It’s also a good idea to make sure that you have got some of wilder dreams out of the way before you get married. When you get married you make commitments to one another and that will mean making compromises too. If you want to ditch your job and go travelling for a year, do it before you get married, or you may regret not having done it before.
3. You need to reach an agreement of finances
Money, mortgages, and bank loans are probably not at the front of your mind when you are in love and looking forward to getting married, and many people do not put enough thought into their finances before they tie the knot. How will your finances be organised? This is not the most romantic, yet one of the most practical things to know before getting married. Agree on how you will handle the finances before you get married and it will avoid a lot of arguing later.
4. Do you agree about children?
There are a few things that you need to understand about each other before you get married too. One of the most important things to know before getting married and have reached an agreement on is whether or not, or when, you will have children. If you brush this one under the carpet, it will become a major issue later on, so you both need to know if you intended starting a family, and when.
5. Does he get on with your family?
The fact that your boyfriend doesn’t like your father may not be a big deal when you are just dating, but when you get married, that could get in the way of you seeing your own father. Like it or not, when you get married, you join each other’s family and that means attending family gatherings and having the in-laws stay over to stay with you.
6. Don’t dump all your friends when you get married
Many people do desert their friends when they get married and then regret it later. You will need a life outside of your marriage, and it’s healthy in a marriage for both of you to go out with friends sometimes. You may not believe this right now, if you are caught up in all the romance, but the ‘flower-chocolate period’ really doesn’t last forever and you will miss your friends after a while if you do dump them.
7. You won’t be able to change him
This is another one of very important things to know before getting married. You definitely should be reconsidering your decision to get married, if you think you can change him. A ring in the finger doesn’t instantly change a person, so if you are expecting your wild man to become the perfect husband after the honeymoon, you might be in for a shock.
8. But, you will both change over time
When you get married you are agreeing to be with your partner for the long run and people do change over time. The relationship will probably become more settled and, arguably, even a little bit boring. You will both have to adapt to these changes and work at making sure that the relationship stays both interesting and secure.
9. You will both have to change your routines
Unless you have lived with the guy for a long time before the wedding, you will both have to learn how to live together and that can take longer than you might think to happen. You might discover that you both have some irritating habits that you had not realised before, and you will have to change your daily routines to fit in with each other too.
10. You will probably have some doubts
One of the biggest shocks that newlyweds often have is that they find themselves wondering if they have done the right thing. When you have your first serious fight, or you come up against a major thing that you can’t agree on, it is only natural that you might begin to doubt that marriage was a good move after all. That, though, is when the marriage becomes stronger, you make compromises, and you realise that the marriage is more important than a single disagreement.
